Two dogs dead after being rescued from bottom of cliff in Hawaii

MOKULEIA, HI (KHON) – There is another possible case of animal cruelty after two dogs were found at Kaena Point Saturday. One was dead and the other clinging to life, but it eventually had to be put down.

The investigation is ongoing and the circumstances surrounding the situation remain unclear, but the Hawaiian Humane society is hoping someone with information will help piece together what happened.

It was not a scene hikers expected to find at Kaena Point. Two dogs, one possibly a beagle and the other, a sharpei mix, at the bottom of a steep cliff.

“When they got down there, the dog wasn’t moving. it was already gone,” said Jessica Murray.

Murray was at the park with family when they spotted the animals. Other hikers brought the surviving dog to safety but he was in bad shape.

“His eyes were just swollen, puff pink balls,” Murray said. “He was barely standing up and he wasn’t using one of his legs.”

Good Samaritans took the dog to an emergency vet, but the Hawaiian Humane Society said it was later euthanized.

Now questions linger about how the dogs ended up there in the first place. Pets are prohibited inside Kaena Point.

“Where the dogs were, it kind of seemed like somebody just kicked them off a cliff and left them there,” Murray said. “It really breaks my heart because they’re like our kids. You just don’t take your kids out there and leave them so it’s really heartbreaking.”

The Humane Society said both dogs had microchips that led back to an owner.

“We did notify them that their dogs were found over at Kaena Point,” Hawaiian Humane Society communications coordinator Suzy Tam said. “I can’t really speak much to it because it is an open investigation at this time.”

Whether the situation was intentional or just a sad tragedy, the Humane Society is asking witnesses to come forward.

“Don’t be afraid to call us at 356-2250. we will investigate every single tip that’s called in,” Tam said.
