Local Fashion Stylist shows us how to use a COAT to elevate any winter look

It’s winter, and often times people think that means you can throw style out the window. However, even if your outfit feels like it’s got the winter blues, you can use a stylish coat to elevate any look. Check out these tips from Fashion Stylist Kiarra Logan:

Closet Staples

If you’re looking to make an investment this season, start with a closet staple such as a leather jacket or varsity jacket. For women, and men, these staples can stand the test of fashion time and will go with many things you already own. I purchased a leather jacket from Rag & Bone over 8 years ago and still use it to this day. My Saint Laurent varsity jacket is also a staple because of the color and chic look. If you want to invest, just make sure the color or style is something you can see yourself wearing repeatedly.

Shop Small

This season, with many small businesses struggling, its important to try and support as many as we can. I shopped small and got a major style win with this plaid coat from Shop Sugar Drip. I paired it with a hoodie and boots, for a nice casual look.

Vintage Finds

I always mention shopping vintage because it is sustainable and supports a small business, but I also love it because the item is unique. When you find a vintage gem, its likely that your friend won’t have the same piece. Zodiac Vintage has a great collection of vintage coats. In fact, my favorite coat is a leopard print vintage gem, and it was under $75 dollars. Vintage shopping isn’t always easy, but it’s certainly worth it.

Biggest Trend of the Season

This season’s biggest outerwear trend is without-a-doubt the shacket. The shacket, which stands for Shirt + Jacket has completely taken over. After several try-ons and fashion “fails”, I found one I loved from Omoni Boutique. I like to layer with a long hoodie, jeans. I have also worn with heels and sneakers. I think it’s a versatile piece, and the price point is good to try the trend!

Classic Longline Wool

If you don’t already have a nice wool coat, I would consider it as important as the leather jacket. Wool coats can be dressed up or down, but if you are dressed down they definitely elevate the look. The classic colors for the wool coat would be black or brown, however if you already have that covered go for a pop of color. Over the years I have styled pink, green, red, and even purple wool coats.
