Red Gold Tip: Caring for your Garden

Linda Wallace, Red Gold Home Economist has tips from the pros on caring for and watering your garden.

1. Don’t over water – need 1 to 2 inches of water per week. Watch for wilting – needs water. Over watering robs roots of air.

2. Don’t splash water on plants when watering, water from ground level

3. Don’t water with automatic sprinklers – everyday watering results in surface rot. Water deeply once a week. Avoid watering right before sundown.

4. Morning is the best time to water. Plants need to completely dry before night. By watering in the morning you conserve the moisture loss and help to avoid powdery mildew and fungal diseases that spread with high humidity.

5. Use cold water – don’t use hose coiled up in sun. Hot water stresses sensitive plants – run hot water out of hose before watering plants.

6. So not walk on or work the soil when it is wet
