1 dead, 2 hurt in overnight shootings around Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Detectives in Indianapolis are investigating three shootings, one of them deadly, that happened early Tuesday morning.

The first happened around 12:30 a.m. on English Avenue, near Sherman Drive, on the city’s southeast side. Officers say the suspect was walking down the street and asked a man on a porch for a cigarette. That’s when police say the two started fighting, and one shot the other in the leg. That man was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. His condition is not known.

Two hours later, around 2:30 a.m. police were called to the 1000 block of Pine Mountain Way on the report of a person shot. This is near 10th Street and North German Church Road. Police say a woman called 911, saying her husband had been shot. Officers arrived and detained a person of interest inside the home, who they believe is a relative. That person was taken in for questioning and a weapon was recovered from the scene. The male victim, who police say was shot in the head, was taken to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. Detectives say they don’t believe this was a random act.

Around the same time that shooting was reported, police were called just north to another incident, in the 3100 block of Cluster Pine Drive. This is near East 30th Street and North German Church Road. Police say the victim of this shooting, 19-year-old David W. Phelps, died. They say someone called 911 from the home saying someone had broken in. When police arrived, they found Phelps dead. At this time, police do not think it was a random act. At least two people were sitting in squad cars at the scene, but officials said no one was in custody in connection to the shooting.

Anyone with information on any of these shootings can call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
