12-year-old in critical condition after shooting on near-east side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A 12-year-old boy was in surgery in critical condition after a Thursday afternoon shooting on the near-east side, police said. 

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer were sent about 2:45 p.m. to the 4800 block of East New York Street. That’s a residential area between North Sherman Drive and Emerson Avenue. 

The boy is at Riley Children’s Health hospital. 

IMPD officers were talking to multiple witnesses, all children. Police at the scene said the shooting is believed to have happened in an alley off New York Street and Wallace Avenue, but what lead up to it was still uncertain. 

Neighbors told News 8 they are in shock after the shooting. One reported hearing four shots.
