Franklin violent home robbery suspect in custody

RICHMOND, Ind. (WISH) — Richmond police responded to a call of burglary in progress. They found the caller, Reese Keith, hiding in the bushes.

Authorities have apprehended Keith, the suspect in a violent home robbery that occurred hours after Keith was in Greenwood police custody.

Police confirmed Reese Keith, 27, was taken into custody in Saturday in Richmond.

Keith was identified by Franklin police earlier this week in connection with a violent home robbery after he checked out of a nearby hospital. When an elderly couple in Franklin returned home, a man wearing a mask greeted them with a gun, stole the couple’s guns and took off in their car. Keith was supposed to be in jail Monday when that robbery took place. As 24-Hour News 8 previously reported, Reese Keith was in the custody of Greenwood police hours before he allegedly terrorized the couple.

According to Captain Bobby Lipps with the Richmond Police around 3:30 p.m. Saturday Richmond police received a call of a burglary in progress on the south side of the city.

When Richmond officers responded, they found the caller – who had identified himself over the phone as Nicholas Ottinger but who was later identified as Reese Keith – hiding in the bushes outside a home. Keith claimed that when he got home two people were inside his house and then they ran off. As officers continued to talk with him, they realized who he was, and that the house was not his residence.

According to Richmond police, Keith was under the influence of narcotics when they found him Saturday afternoon. They say the home he was hiding near was secure, and he had not broken into it.

Richmond police contacted authorities in Johnson County, who asked that Keith be held for transfer. During that time, Lipps says Keith “tweaked” and was making no sense likely due to narcotics. He was taken to the hospital to undergo examination.

Authorities in Richmond are waiting for Keith’s release from the hospital so that he can be processed into Wayne County jail to await transfer to Johnson County.

Keith does not face any charges in Wayne County.
