Indiana Senate panel sidelines ending straight-ticket voting
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A push to eliminate straight party-line voting on Indiana election ballots has been sidelined in the state Senate.
The Senate Elections Committee voted Monday to request that the issue be assigned to a study committee for review following this year’s legislative session.
Bill sponsor Republican Sen. Mike Delph of Carmel said no longer allowing straight party-line voting with one click or mark of an election ballot would encourage better citizenship by making voters more responsible for their choices.
Several committee members raised concerns about making such a significant change to Indiana’s election process.
A similar bill is awaiting a vote in the full House, where Republican leaders have made the issue one of their top legislative goals.
