Indianapolis artist hopes to design Manning statue

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Contrary to earlier reports, the Peyton Manning statue has yet to be designed. And a local Indianapolis sculptor is hoping the Indianapolis Colts will choose him to create it.

His name is Pat Mack, his designs have been featured all over the city but this one he said would be like hitting the jackpot. Mack is a big Colts fan.

“Sometimes people have a hard time at imagining it if they don’t see it.” Mack sad “I’m not used to working on something this small.”

The model made out of a gray-colored clay. But if chosen, the statue would be 10 feet tall and bronze.

“It’s amazing how when you work with a life-size piece how much easier it is just to get the face right,” Mack said.

24-Hour News 8 showed pictures of the design to folks at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“I like that one very well. I think that would be fantastic,” one fan said.

“I think it’s pretty good, looks like him so that’s always a positive,” another one added.

This comes after the Colts made the statue announcement last month.

“At the time, I said, ‘oh my gosh, that would be so cool to do that,’ but I thought it’s probably already in the works,” Mack said.

Mack, who has done pieces for the Simon family and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, made some calls.

“They said well how soon can you get a model? I said ‘about three or four weeks,’ and they said ‘we’re going to make a decision in three, can you have it here earlier,’” he said. “The last ten days, this is what I came up with. I think I have a good shot at it and it would be an honor to do this and be a part of sharing Peyton’s legacy,” Mack added

The Colts said they have about 20 different artists interested, including one other from Indianapolis. They added they will not rush their decision.
