One of last surviving USS Indianapolis crew members dies

(WISH) — One of the last surviving crew members of the USS Indianapolis has died.

According to a post made by the official USS Indianapolis Facebook page, Robert “Bob” Witzig passed away Tuesday night. Witzig was 96 years old.

“Bob was one of the few remaining Indy crew members who had served aboard the ship for an extensive time prior to the sinking, and in recent years, reconnected with other survivors by attending the annual reunions,” the Facebook post said in part.

The ship was torpedoed on July 30, 1945, with 1,196 men onboard.

Only 316 people survived. Those men and their families have been reuniting in Indianapolis since 1960.

There are only seven remaining survivors, according to the post.
