Police exhume body in Boone County cold case

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Police have exhumed the body of a woman found dead in a ditch in the early 1990s.

24-Hour News 8 recently reported on Jane Doe, whose death was investigated in 1992 until the case ran cold. A WISH-TV viewer called the Boone County Sheriff’s Office after seeing the story, offering a tip that led police to her grave.

The sheriff’s department has questioned several people. No arrests were made as of Friday afternoon.

The woman was believed to be between 20 and 40 years old. When she was found, she was naked from the waist down.

Jane Doe was sent to the University of Indianapolis. Pathologists there will put together a new DNA profile with advanced forensic technology that wasn’t available back in 1992. The results could take up to a month.

“My primary goal is to identify her and give the woman’s family closure. Second, this profile could confirm who brutally attacked her. All of this we will use down the line in court,” said Boone County Sheriff Mike Neilson.
