Teen girl shot while asleep in home

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A teenage girl is in stable condition, after police say she was shot while she was sleeping early Tuesday morning.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says the 17-year-old was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom in a home in the 3500 block of Illinois Street, when shots came through the back of the home.

It’s unclear how many shots were fired, but police say the teen was transported to Methodist Hopsital in stable condition.

Detectives spent the morning canvassing the neighborhood. They said they found several shell casings from an assault style rifle behind the home. There is an alley behind the home.

Police say several other people were inside the home at the time of the shooting.
