Hoax circulates on Facebook

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – It happens every now and then – a hoax about Facebook privacy that fills up Facebook timelines all over the world.

There’s another going around now, and it’s similar to one that surfaced a few years ago. You may see it on your timeline – people post a message saying they’re officially notifying Facebook that the social media giant doesn’t have rights to their photos and other copyrighted material.

Snopes, the site that popularly debunks rumors, explains the hoax.

Facebook users enter into an agreement with Facebook when they create an account with the website. That agreement can’t be modified or nullified by simply posting something on one’s Facebook page. Also, users retain the copyright on all of their materials – however, Facebook does have the ability to use that copyrighted material if it chooses.
