Pacers host event to help Indiana’s hungry
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indiana Pacers hosted an effort to help the hungry in area communities on Monday by packing donations for the Million Meal Movement.
The organization was founded in Indiana to empower volunteers and stock food pantries.
The Pacers said star Rodney Stuckey led more than 400 volunteers as part of the team’s Season of Giving campaign.
The goal is to pack 124,000 meals to stock Gleaner’s Food Bank. Many volunteers will be employees from the team’s partner, The RoomPlace.
The meals are individual packages that can feed a family of four to six people, according to Jill Madinger, the executive director for Million Meal Movement.
Each bag contained four ingredients: rice, soy, dried vegetables and a blend of vitamins and minerals.
“Our mission at the Million Meal Movement is to engage folks and volunteer. Have a meaningful volunteer experience both adults and youth. The product of that is creating these wonderfully nutritious meals that get distributed throughout Indiana,” Madinger said.
Statistics show one million people in Indiana, including one in five children, do not know where they will get their next meal.
The Pacers and The RoomPlace hosted the packing event from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday.
