Rain stalls traffic; causes power outages

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Rain caused several crashes on Sunday afternoon as it rolled in to central Indiana on Sunday.

A slow moving system moved in from the south, sparking showers and a few thunderstorms for our southern counties, and filled in across all of central Indiana through the rest of the day. Steady showers will continue into the mid-evening hours, before becoming more isolated late this evening into the overnight.

Indiana State Police said several crashes were reported on Sunday afternoon due to the weather. ISP said traffic was backed up along I-65 northbound near the 89.6 mile marker around 5:30 p.m. Drivers near the crash said they were sitting in traffic for more than an hour. INDOT cameras showed an over turned semi at the I-70 south split. Crews were working to clear the semi from the road before 4 p.m.

Duke Energy reported that 3,699 people were experiencing power outages in Hamilton County. Duke said they estimate restoration by 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Most areas across central Indiana could pick up anywhere between 1/2″ to 1″ of rainfall on Sunday.

Another round of showers will move into central Indiana during the day on Monday.
