2 mumps cases confirmed at IU Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) – Indiana University is investigating two confirmed cases of mumps on the Bloomington campus.

Officials say the cases were identified two weeks apart. They say there’s no connection between the two cases at this time.

IU is working with the Monroe County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health on identifying and notifying anyone who may have been in close contact with the students. They’re also working to prevent additional transmission of the illness.

School officials are advising the campus and community to learn about the mumps. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, and swollen and tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides, according to the CDC. It’s spread from direct and indirect contact with an infected person’s respiratory droplets, which can be transmitted by sneezing and coughing.

Students with symptoms should stay home and immediately call before going to the IU Health Center at 812-855-5002 during office hours, or 812-330-3790 after hours.
