A Kid Again creates virtual adventures for kids

A Kid Again program goes virtual

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH)– Nonprofit A Kid Again has hosted year-round events to support kids who face life threatening illnesses and their families by taking them from their everyday struggles and sending them on adventures.

They had to find more creative ways to have adventures after the COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel a lot of their planned trips and activities. However, the Indiana chapter says they found some magic up their sleeves.

“If we can’t get our families together at the park or the zoo, let’s take these adventures virtual,” said Katie Pappas, executive director of the Indiana chapter of A Kid Again.

Pappas stresses why she believes it’s important to get creative and keep these adventures going while the coronavirus pandemic continues to shift Hoosiers’ idea of normal.

“It’s really important,” Pappas said. “For a lot of our families this is the kind of lifestyle they live on a regular basis. They keep to themselves and they have to be really careful about not getting sick. We’re all getting a little bit of a taste of what it’s like to be in their shoes. Now more than ever we know how important it is to have something to look forward to.”

They started with a virtual scavenger hunt for their kids, but then they decided to do something special where any kid could be a part, an online magic show featuring 25 professional magicians.

“I think we all kind of need a break right now, parents included,” Pappas said. “We welcome any kid that’s hanging out at home and you just want to learn a little bit more about magic and be entertained.”

Even though A Kid Again is inviting all families for this virtual event, she’s keeping in mind what it means for the kids the organization serves.

It’s “just that little bit of a break, that time out from illness,” Pappas said. “Let’s continue interacting with each other and hanging out the best we can.”

The magic show, hosted by Jon Petz & Friends, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday. Sign up online.
