Celebrating women and what they’ve done in the workforce

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – March is Women’s History Month and WISH-TV is celebrating by talking about how women have changed the workforce in America.

Pat Wachtel, the president and CEO of Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis spoke to 24-Hour News 8 about how women have influenced the workplace and how the wage gap has changed.

“Women in Indianapolis still earn 76 cents for every dollar paid to men,” Wachtel said. “However, African American women are paid 64 cents and Latina women are paid just 55 cents.”

Women working in STEM fields is drastically different, with women only making up 25.7 percent of the field.

Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis is an organization that inspires girls to be smart, strong and bold. Girls are half as likely to pursue science careers.

“About 57 percent of girls surveyed by Girl Scouts Research Institute agreed that ‘if they want a STEM career, they’d have to work harder than a man just to be taken seriously,” Wachtel said.
