Central Indiana cities offering warming centers, refuge from the elements
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Bone-chilling temperature and frigid wind chills have hit central Indiana.
Many schools districts and universities throughout the state canceled classes due to the extreme weather conditions.
Citizens have been advised to stay indoors and seek refuge from the temperatures and wind chills. However, for those who may be in need of a place to stay in order to avoid the conditions, several counties and cities are offering places of shelter.
The following is a list of warming centers:
From Indianapolis: The city will open a warming center at Indy Parks’ Municipal Gardens, 1831 Lafayette Road, from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 9 p.m. Thursday.
George Whirley, pastor of New Creations Restoration Church, said Wednesday night that the building will be open as a community warming center through Friday. The church is at 6915 E. Washington St. Call for details: (317) 213-3578.
A news release from Porch Light PR said a planned count of the city’s homeless population will proceed as planned Wednesday night, but people found in the severe cold will be taken to shelters.
Additional warming center have now been opened at the Beech Grove Senior Citizens Center, 602 Main Street, open until 8pm, the Beech Grove Community Center, 5245 Hornet Avenue, open until 8 pm.
Another one has also been opened at Free Methodist Church, 2303 West Morris Street, which is open 24 hours and does accept pets.
From Abington: Abington Fire Department, 4618 Pottershop Road.
From Alexandria: Several daytime warming centers will operate. They will provide seating, but no bedding, food or beverages.
Alexandria-Monroe Public Library, 117 E. Church St., will be open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Jane Pauley Community Health Center, 121 W. Washington St. will be open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
Monroe Township Trustee Office, 204 W. Berry St., will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
From Anderson: Hospitals and a church are offering warming centers. They will provide seating, but no bedding, food or beverages.
Community Hospital, 1515 N. Madison Ave., asks people to enter through the emergency department and check in with the security personnel to be escorted to the designated room. The warming center will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital, 2015 Jackson St., asks people to enter through the emergency room and ask for security personnel, who will make arrangements for people. The warming center will be open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Main Street Church of God, 4211 Main St., will have its warming center open from 1 p.m. Tuesday to noon Friday.
The dining room of the Christian Center, 625 Main St., will be open every day temperatures are below freezing. Call (765) 644-2538 for details.
From Avon: Call the Hendricks County Communications Center at (317) 837-7873 to access a shelter at Washington Township/Avon, 7222 E. U.S. 36
From Bloomington: Several facilities will operate warming shelters in specific hours, but a news release from the city did not indicate what days they would operate: Twin Lakes Recreation Center: 1700 W. Bloomfield Road, 6 a.m.-10 p.m.; City Hall: 401 N. Morton St., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Fire Station 1: 300 E. Fourth St., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Bloomington Police Department: 220 E. Third St., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Police Training Center: 3230 S. Walnut St., 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
From Brownsburg: Call the Hendricks County Communications Center at (317) 837-7873 to access these shelters: Brownsburg fire headquarters, 470 E. Northfield Drive, and Brownsburg police headquarters, 31 N. Green St.
From Cambridge City: The Cambridge City Fire Department, 127 W. Maple St., will have a short-term warming station with minimal accommodations.
From Carmel: The city will begin offering a warming center to those affected by Wednesday morning’s power outages at Carmel High School.
Residents are advised to enter Carmel High School through door 13 on the west side. Pets are welcome but they must be in crates.
The shelter will run until 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
From Centerville: Centerville Fire/Rescue, 414 S. Morton St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Chesterfield: Millcreek Civic Center, a banquet center at 403 W. Main St., will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
From Danville: Call the Hendricks County Communications Center at (317) 837-7873 to access the shelter at Danville fire, 50 Twin Bridges Road.
From Dublin (Wayne County): Dublin Fire Department, 2248 E. Cumberland Road, will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Economy: Economy Fire Department, 138 Poplar St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Elwood: St. Vincent Mercy Hospital, 1331 S. A St., asks people to enter through the emergency walk-in entrance and go to the front desk. Call in advance to make arrangements if you wish: (765) 552-4600. They will provide seating, but no bedding, food or beverages.
From Fountain City: Fountain City Fire Department, 312 W. Main St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Franklin: Franklin Parks and Recreation, 396 Branigan Blvd., is open from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.
From Greenfield: The Greenfield Police Department said the First Presbyterian Church, 116 W. South St., will be open beginning at 7 p.m. Monday as serve as a warming center through Wednesday. The homeless and people who are without power or heat are welcome.
From Greens Fork: Greens Fork Fire Department, 114 E. Pearl St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Greenwood: Greenwood Community Center, 100 Surina Way, is open from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday.
From Hagerstown: Hagerstown Fire Department, 151 N. Plum St., and First Hagerstown United Methodist Church, 199 S. Perry St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations. The church will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
From Kokomo: The dining room of the Kokomo Rescue Mission, 321 W. Mulberry St., will be open as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The dining room will continue to serve meals at its regular times, noon and 4:30 p.m.
The Kokomo Rescue Mission’s men’s shelter said Monday it has open beds available.
The city government said in a tweet that Kokomo Senior Center, 721 W. Superior St., will be open continuously from 6 a.m. Tuesday through 5 p.m. Jan. 31. The center will be fully staffed.
From Lizton: Call the Hendricks County Communications Center at (317) 837-7873 to access the shelter at Lizton-Union Township Fire Department, 101 E. Main St.
From Milton: Milton Fire Department, 200 E. Walnut St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Noblesville: The Lodge at Forest Park will be open as a warming center from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday and again from 5 p.m. Wednesday to 8 a.m. Thursday. Forest Park is off State Road 19 and Field Drive. During the day, the Noblesville Township Trustee Community Center, 372 S. Eighth St., will open as warming center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.
From Pittsboro: Call the Hendricks County Communications Center at (317) 837-7873 to access the shelter at Pittsboro Police Station, 80 N. Meridian St.
From Plainfield: Call the Hendricks County Communications Center at (317) 837-7873 to access the shelter at Plainfield fire headquarters, 591 Moon St.
From Richmond: Short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations will be “on-call” at these locations.
Central United Methodist Church, 1425 E. Main St., 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Genesis of the YWCA, 15 S. 11th St., 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Mount Olive Baptist Church, 1108 N. Eighth St., 9 a.m. to noon Thursday.
Morrison Reeves Library, 80 N. Sixth St., 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Rock Solid Ministries, 1024 E. Main St., will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday .
Richmond Community Senior Center, 1600 S. Second St., 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. The site will be able to serve youths with parental supervision.
Richmond Fire Department Station 1, 101 S. Fifth St., and Station 5, 1971 W. Main St., will be open from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday. The sites will not be set up to accommodate overnight stays.
From Webster: Webster Fire Department, 5122 Main St., will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
From Williamsburg: Williamsburg Fire Department, 8323 N. Centerville Road, will have short-term warming stations with minimal accommodations.
