Indianapolis man convicted of 2017 downtown murder

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man was convicted for the 2017 murder of another Indianapolis man in Marion County court Thursday.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said Thursday that Richard Williams was convicted for the murder of Johnny Woods after a three-day jury trial.

Woods was found in the early morning of Sept. 21, 2017, near a parking lot on West Louisiana Street and South Meridian Street in the downtown Wholesale District. That’s just blocks northeast of Lucas Oil Stadium. Police in 2017 said officers in the area heard gunshots, ran to check and saw the victim on the sidewalk. The shooting happened shortly after nearby downtown bars had closed at 3 a.m. and their customers were leaving and heading home.

Woods was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators say multiple witnesses identified Williams as the man who had gotten into a physical altercation with Woods inside a downtown bar just before the shooting happened. One witness said he saw Williams pull a gun and shoot Woods just after they left the bar.

A sentencing hearing for Williams has been set for March 11 at 10 a.m.
