Financial aid events held statewide to help file for aid

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Financial aid professionals volunteered at 36 locations across the state to help families fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The events were at 2 p.m. on Sunday, which is known as College Goal Sunday.

The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges and universities nationwide.

The form must be filed with the state by March 10 for a student to be eligible for Indiana financial aid.

“The financial aid administrators across the the state, 26 years ago, realized that families were intimidated by the FAFSA and they said why don’t we help families completely for free and have a day where we do this.” Wozniak added, “The biggest myth about the FAFSA is that it’s this horrible, long and evil form. We’re trying to dispel that. The form is now done online so a lot of the questions disappear. You answer a certain question and other questions you’ll never see. It’s gotten 100 times easier over the last few years,” Bill Wozniak, media coordinator for College Goal Sunday said.

Students who attend any of the College Goal Sunday sites and submit a completed FAFSA form will automatically be entered into a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship.

Wozniak said 16 scholarships will be awarded. The scholarship will be sent directly to the educational institution each winning student selects to attend.
