Grand jury reviewing fatal police shooting in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana grand jury will recommend whether seven Elkhart police officers should face criminal charges in the shooting death of a man they say raised a gun toward them while trying to flee.

The Elkhart Truth reports Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill Jr. was scheduled to begin presenting evidence Tuesday in the Sept. 23 shooting of 32-year-old Joseph Lee of Goshen. It isn’t known how long it would take to present the evidence or how long it would take for the six-member grand jury to return a decision.

A news release from the prosecutor’s office said Hill is the legal adviser of the grand jury and must approve any indictment for it to be valid.

State police submitted a report on the shooting to Hill in November.
