IPFW student reportedly sexually assaulted in campus housing

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – An IPFW student was reportedly sexually assaulted in the university’s student housing early Friday.

IPFW Police issued a campus-wide alert just before 9 a.m. Friday that indicated the assault took place in campus housing early Friday morning. The alert said the victim met the alleged suspect online.

Kim Wagner, IPFW’s head of public relations, told NewsChannel 15 that after the pair connected online “a few days ago,” the student invited the suspect to a room in student housing “which led to the alleged assault.” Wagner said the incident was likely not random due to the online meeting.

“We sent a notification to campus to make them aware of the situation, in the interest of overall campus safety,” Wagner said.

No other details of the assault were released. Wagner said federal law prohibits the university from releasing details about the student. She said the investigation is ongoing at this point.

IPFW Police Chief Steve Kimbrough said the force is working with the Fort Wayne Police Department. He added the victim is cooperating.

The alert sent to students included campus safety tips and urged students: “If you see something, say something!”
