Ivy Tech campuses selected for apprenticeship programs

FORT WAYNE and WARSAW, Ind. (Inside INdiana Business) – The U.S. Department of Labor has selected Ivy Tech Community College as one of 18 organizations in the country to oversee the development of Industry-Recognized Apprenticeship Programs. Ivy Tech says the designation, which includes the Fort Wayne and Warsaw campuses, will benefit industry partners as it works to expand apprenticeships and help close the skills gap.

Kaylene Smith, Ivy Tech Fort Wayne’s director of apprenticeship and work-based learning, says Standards Recognition Entities are third-party industry and workforce partners. Ivy Tech, along with the other 18 SREs, will be tasked with expanding apprenticeship opportunities in industries where apprenticeships have been underutilized.

The SRE designation is valid for five years.

Ivy Tech says its Fort Wayne and Warsaw campuses currently work with more than 40 industry partners to facilitate the apprenticeship programs. According to the USDOL, 91% of apprentices who complete an apprenticeship program remain with their employer.

  • Iowa Department of Education (Iowa)
  • National Institute for Metalworking Skills (National)

  • Smart Automation Certification Alliance (National)
  • Texas Workforce Commission (Texas)
  • WTIA Workforce Consulting (National)

The college says the apprenticeship programs are part of the USDOL’s efforts to expand access to in-demand job opportunities.
