Local church finds way to get teens off the streets

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Nu Corinthian Church sits near 56th and Lafayette Road.

On Friday night, after Pike High School home football games members open the church’s gymnasium from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Inside the gym teenagers are treated to food, games and even sumo wrestling.

This is done under the watchful eye of chaperones, and the Marion County Sheriffs Office.

All high school students are invited to the event called Overtime, as long as the students bring in a valid student ID’s.

“God has blessed our church to have this nice gym space, one of our mission is to get out in the streets and outside of the church’s walls,” said Pastor Terry Webster Jr.

Members at the church have seen the troubling headlines in the news of crimes where teens are the victims, and sometimes the suspect. So the church would to provide an opportunity for high school students.

The event is free, thanks to donors and other sponsors.

Recently Pastor Webster received some positive feedback from one of the teens about the Friday night celebration.

“I never thought I could go to a church and have fun,” said Webster, as he shared a story from one of the teenagers who attended the Friday night event.
