Man hit in officer-involved shooting on northwest side
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – One man was hit in an officer-involved shooting on the city’s northwest side Thursday morning.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials have not released the man’s name yet, but neighbors identify him as Raul Zarco. They say Zarco lives in the home with his wife, teenage son and preteen daughter. One said Zarco’s adult son was home Wednesday night.
One neighbor told us she was awakened early in the morning to the sound of her neighbor shouting at her husband in Spanish in their driveway. The neighbor said she saw the husband in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, and the adult son in the driveway as well. The neighbor said the husband went back inside the home and the next time she woke up there was an ambulance in the cul-de-sac.
Other neighbors we spoke to said the family has lived in the neighborhood for years and have largely kept to themselves. They couldn’t think of a reason why Zarco would threaten a police officer.
Police said the man was alert and talking during transportation to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. He was said to be in serious, but stable condition on Thursday morning.
When we knocked on the door today, a teenage boy answered saying he was Zarco’s son, and that his father was still in the hospital. He did not want to go on camera without his parents.
According to the IMPD, officers initially responded to a residence in the 5900 block of Ann Marie Way for a domestic situation just before 1 a.m.
In addition to the husband and wife, there were three children in the residence as well, police said. After arriving on scene, an evacuation began in order to ensure their safety.
Police, who were inside the home talking to a female, said her husband was inside a bedroom and refused to exit the room. IMPD says the man had warned police that he did have a gun.
They also say the man threatened to harm himself or officers if anyone came into the bedroom.
Special weapons and tactics team members were on their way to the scene when the man emerged from the room and shot at least once. He was shot in the head. Police said another officer fired at Taser stun gun at the suspect.
It’s unclear at this time if the man was armed at the time of shooting. However, police have said they have not found a weapon yet.
The shooting remained under investigation. As is standard procedure for all officer-involved shootings, IMPD’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an internal investigation.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8577.
