Man killed in his apartment stairwell identified

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Investigators have released the name of a man who was shot to death in the stairwell of his apartment building.

The victim was identified as 66-year-old Patrick Wilson. He was killed around 4:15 p.m. Friday in the 3800 block of Bennett Drive. Family members tell 24-Hour News 8 that Wilson had just returned from picking up some groceries for dinner that night.

Police said witnesses heard gunshots coming from the hallway. They said Wilson was found laying in the stairwell with gunshot wounds to his torso. He died at the scene.

Friday afternoon, investigators said witnesses claimed to see a black male running away from the apartment after the shots were fired, but they were getting conflicting reports on what direction the man was running.

Family members said Wilson always walked wherever he needed to go. They said they couldn’t imagine why someone would shoot him.

Anyone with information that can help police with the investigation can call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
