No decision in fate of historic German church

CUMBERLAND, Ind. (WISH) — Even after a rezoning hearing, the future of a historic German church in Cumberland is still up in the air.

As 24-Hour News 8 reported Tuesday, the congregation can no longer afford to maintain the building at the corner of Washington Street and German Church Road.

They’re trying to sell it to Giant Eagle, who would build a new gas station and convenience store.

The town of Cumberland wants to use the land in another way.

About three dozen people in favor of the town’s plan showed up to Wednesday’s rezoning hearing.

Those in attendance said there was not a quorum of commissioners. One commissioner recused himself before testimony while another recused herself during the hearing.

The hearing was put on hold until May 6.
