Noblesville woman makes ‘trashy’ sign to stop littering

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — A Noblesville woman is taking a unique approach to address a littering problem in her neighborhood.

Carolyn Stump says she’s not sure if there’s anything more that she can do about the bottles and empty cans in her sub division. She told 24-Hour News 8 she’s been picking up the trash almost every single day, but now she’s hoping a homemade sign will get people to stop.

“Anybody that lives in this neighborhood should want the entrance to their neighborhood to be nice and inviting not filled with trash,” said Stump.

Some drivers did a double take Tuesday evening as they were pulling into the Cumberland Pointe subdivision.

“I just noticed the sign this morning and it caught my attention because it was basically a bunch of trash hanging from a sign on a lamp post,” said Dave Petershon, resident. “I think it’s cool when people take initiatives to make our neighborhood better.”

Stump is one of them. Not only is she trying to make her neighborhood a better and cleaner place, but she’s also trying to get a message across to other residents.

“I think it’s really disgusting that you can’t take your trash to your own house to throw it away,” said Stump.

Stump says it’s been an ongoing problem for more than a year now with people throwing out trash as they turn into Cumberland Pointe. Because she lives near the main entrance, Stump says most of the trash ends up in her yard.

“I take care of my yard and I shouldn’t have to come home to find your bottles and cans in my yard, driveway and on my porch,” said Stump. “It goes down into the neighbor’s yard.”

Instead of tossing out the bottles and cans in the future, Stump is planning to add to the growing collection.

“Since it’s been up, there’s not been any new bottles thrown out so I don’t know if I need to keep it up to do that or not,” said Stump.

The sign has been up for about two days now. Cumberland Pointe HOA is encouraging residents to speak up about any concerns or issues at their next meeting in two weeks.

The City of Noblesville says littering is illegal. The law is enforced by the Noblesville Police Department. If caught, you could be fined around $150.
