Passing stopped school buses in Canada will now cost you your license
VANCOUVER (KRON) – Drivers in Canada may want to think twice when passing a school bus.
According to CBC News, drivers who do not stop for a school bus will lose their license for three months and could also face a fine of up to $5,000.
The law, which was passed in the Canadian province Prince Edward Island, goes into effect Dec. 8.
To get one’s license back, the driver would have to do the following:
- Meet with highway safety officials
- Pay a $100 reinstatement fee
- Take a defensive driving course within 6 months of getting license reinstated
Drivers will then be placed on probation. Any points within this year on one’s record means one’s license will be suspended yet again.
The law passed in response to concerned parents and school bus drivers calling for stricter penalties after multiple incidents involving children getting hit or nearly hit while getting on and off school buses.
