Police investigating crash find man shot in car

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Police responding to a report of a car crash arrived instead at the scene of a man shot inside a car. He would die at a hospital, marking the city’s 155th criminal homicide in 2018.

The shooting happened in the 10000 block of Pineneedle Court just after 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The victim was initially transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, but later died at the hospital, according to IMPD.

According to IMPD, officers first received a call of a vehicle crash. Officers on the scene later discovered a man had been shot at another complex. He drove to Carriage House East where he crashed into a black sedan.

“It was just sad, we are living in our last days, we need to get together and start praying more,” said Joann Dickerson.

Witnesses to the crash helped pull the man out of the car. Suddenly, the victim started running, but later collapsed. Crews rushed him to the Eskenazi, where he died.

Detectives did not release the victim’s name, as they try to notify next of kin. As the city records its 155 criminal homicide this year, Indianapolis is two murders away from tying the city’s deadliest year.

“We talk about the number and (the) media talks about the numbers, but the detectives and officers that sit there are not thinking about the numbers, they are thinking about the person that was a victim of this crime, and they are going to work hard to find out the person who committed this crime,” said IMPD Officer Mike Hewitt.
