Runners, walkers take part in annual Beyond the Badge 5K

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) —  Runners and walkers took part in the 15th Annual Beyond the Badge 5K will begin Sunday morning.

The run was created in honor of Jason Baker, a Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed on September 17, 2001, when he was shot during a chase.

His dad, Jerry Baker, a retired police officer himself, established the run to honor those who have been killed in the line of duty, but also to thank current public safety officers.

The money from the race helps support the Jason M. Baker Scholarship Fund, which helps students pursuing a career in public safety at an Indiana college or university.

The 5K course goes through Crown Hill Cemetery and passes by the Heroes of Public Safety Section, an Honor Guard will be posted at the Heroes of Public Safety Memorial during the entire event.

There is a 5K run and fitness walk, as well as a team competition and 1.5 mile family stroll.

Race day registration is $35 and is available for individuals wanting to participate, not teams.
