School bus carrying sports team crashes in Wells Co.
WELLS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – A school bus carrying approximately 34 students crashed in Wells County Tuesday night, according to the Wells County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash was reported around 9:15 p.m. on U.S. 224 and County Road 300 West.
Dispatchers said the driver of the bus and the driver of the other vehicle were transported by ambulance to a hospital with minor injuries. The Bluffton News-Banner reported the driver of the bus was thrown from the vehicle and the driver of the other vehicle had to be removed by firefighters. The paper reported that both individuals were seen walking around afterwards.
The students were expected to be loaded onto another bus from Norwell High School and taken to a Bluffton hospital for evaluation.
Columbia City High School Athletic Director Geoff Penrod said the bus was carrying members of the Eagles volleyball team. He didn’t have any additional information Tuesday night.
The Eagles had just won a match (3-1) at Norwell High School. The crash happened about four miles west of NHS.
Additional details about the crash were not available from the sheriff’s department.
The volleyball team is scheduled to play at home against New Haven on Thursday. It’s unclear if that match will be played as scheduled.
The incident is still under investigation.
