School near Ivy Tech preps for Obama’s visit

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Students at one local school are preparing to share a special surprise with President Obama, who’s scheduled to speak at Ivy Tech Community College Friday afternoon.

Fall Creek Academy is located across the street from Ivy Tech. Although details of the President’s visit are limited, the academy’s students are hoping the Presidential motorcade will pass by their school.

They have placed posters in the school building’s windows and a group of young male students have been practicing a chat they’re hoping to perform for President Obama.

President Obama will speak at Ivy Tech about providing free community college for students.

Fall Creek Academy Dean of Students, James Turner, said his school already has a similar program. He said, “FCA shares the same philosophy as President Obama. We offer free community college schooling here. Students can graduate by their sophomore year and then start taking Ivy Tech classes and leave out of Fall Creek Academy with an associate degree all in four years.”

Fall Creek Academy Senior Brooklyn Taylor is one of the many students who are taking college classes while attending the academy. When she graduates from FCA she  will have earned her high school diploma and over 40 college credits. She said, “I think in the long run it will help a lot because I will only have to go to school for a couple more years which means it’s going to save me a lot of money.”

Taylor plans to transfer the college credit she’s already earned to the University of Indianapolis, where she plans to major in kinesiology.

James Turner says despite Fall Creek Academy offering free community college its students the school is expected to close at the end of the school year. Turner is hoping the President is seeing what the academy is doing and President Obama will work to keep FCA’s doors open.
