Student essay contest honors Indiana female officials

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Some Indiana students will get to meet Indiana first lady Karen Pence and statewide female office holders through an essay contest hosted by the Indiana Department of Administration.

The contest dubbed “Hoosier Heroines: Moments in History” is open to students in grades 5-9. One student from each grade level will be selected to visit the Statehouse and meet Pence, Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann, Secretary of State Connie Lawson, Auditor Suzanne Crouch, Treasurer Kelly Mitchell and Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz.

The contest asks students to discuss a pivotal moment in U.S. or Indiana history and the role Hoosier women played in it. Essays can be political, cultural or personal. They must be submitted to the Indiana Department of Administration by Feb. 20.
