Warm winter brings early spring surprise to Hamilton County

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (WISH) – The warm weather Tuesday has folks across central Indian thinking spring.

There was no shortage of people teeing off in Noblesville. “It’s beautiful,” golfer Sherwood Beimfohr said. “It’s a nice day to be out on the golf course.”

The city had planned to open Fox Prairie next week, but the weather changed things. “This year we haven’t had that really big, deep freeze, and so it allow us to get out on the course a lot earlier without risking, harming the golf course,” Noblesville Parks and Rec Director Brandon Bennett said.

It’s a warm welcome by golfers, who took advantage of not only the nice weather, but an early bird reduced rate. “Certainly we’ve had a lot of phone calls, a lot of people excited to come out,” Bennett said. “[It’s] a little bit of cabin fever.”

Don’t play golf, but you’re ready to enjoy spring? For the first time the city of Noblesville and Fishers are offering neighbors the opportunity to participate in community gardens.

“We’ve talked about it for for a long time,” Fishers Park and Rec Director Tony Elliot said. “It’s been a goal of ours, but with the push from the public we found that the opportunity was right to get something going for this year.”

The city of Noblesville is leasing land to a group to open gardening to the community. It’ll be near the Southside Park.

In Fishers, the parks department is creating 50 plots at Cyntheanne Park. For $20, neighbors will have access to the space.

Although the weather was nice Tuesday, it’ll still be another month before growing starts. “[Tuesday] is perfect,” Elliot. “The ground is soft. It’s about to rain for the next five days, so [that] would be great so that we could start gardening [Tuesday].”

It’s not the forecast golfers like to hear, but at least they got a spring preview. “You never can tell for sure, but my hope is that it’s here to stay,” Beimfohr said.
